“It’s always to soon to quit”

Friday, July 24th, 2009

What does it mean ,”It’s always to soon to quit?” In health and fitness, when an overwhelming part of the time you are applying yourself to make things happen with your body, and it is often not fast enough, you think I should just quit. What’s the point? This isn’t working anyway? Or it is working but taking way to long and well I would rather just stay fat then to have to keep working so hard for such small changes. Why can’t it be tomorrow that I am fit?

Is this you? Is this one of the reasons you are still struggling with your weight? You continue to quit way to soon? Just not seeing enough changes to compell you to hang in there till you reach your goal weight? Well quess what, join the majority of people who continue to struggle and often arrive at the state of mind, at some point, that they just are meant to be fat because they just CAN’T lose weight. (Unless of course it is some crazy starvation new craze program their neighbors been doing and she lost 20 lbs last month.)

Wrong, just not so. So often, and I mean way to often we will get clients who start training with us and they get to 4 weeks into their working out season of there life, and we do their bodyfat and photos and compare. For some of them they get very excited and say, “well great I can really see some changes.” For others it’s more like “this sucks, I’ve been busting my butt, focusing on my eating, cardio, cardio and cardio and this is all that has changed?” And then they start to way out the pros and cons of this whole working out thing. Do they really want to have to keep up this pace, keep working out, keep focusing on their food and get not much(in their eyes) in return.  A whole lota investment of time and energy for what? A lousy 5 pounds(scale weight) weight loss. “Jeez, I could lose five pound in two days of not eating!”

What many people don’t realize is that a healthy body transformation is a cumulative effect system. For example, you start pigging out and consuming way to many calories every day for a while. (Often this is shortly before you start your next weight loss attempt.) Your body will then go into a fat storing mode as long as this continues. If you had a strong metabolism  before you started this binge season then you probably could get away for a short time in your overeating without drastic noticeable changes but over a period of time that reverses. And the weight will then just pile on until something changes. If you don’t change anything then you will just continue to gain weight.

Now imagine, for most of our clients trying to lose weight, coming in to us with very unhealthy eating habits and low to no metabolism. The very first thing that has to happen is to change the course of their body from fat storer to fat burner. Because they probably were unhealthy eaters who ate junk, ate too much, ate once a day but a ton in that one sitting, never moved their body, don’t really know what is healthy eating and exercise. Don’t know how exactly should they take care of this thing called their body. Or they will sometimes and come in for help and insist that they eat healthy and work out but look at this fat, “I get it from my mom’s side of the family.”  (Ya sure…whatever you say.)

They start the shift from fat storer to fat burner. And quess what? It does not happen overnight. Sorry! You have to put the time in. You have to commit to doing things everyday towards your goal of having an healthy and fit body. Recognize that you have to change the direction of being a fat storer to fat burner and I have seen it take from two weeks to ten weeks depending on the person. Yes that is correct. For some people they will have very small, modest changes and then at ten weeks, suddenly(it least it seems that way) they will just start dropping weight, size and it becomes very noticeable to everyone in their life. Why? Because their body finally trusts them. Their body has figured out what exactly they are doing and finally it is working properly for them and viola’ magic happens. Well not really magic, although to many it seems that way.

Finally you are a fat burning machine. So you decide you can then eat anything you want, whenever you want again? No! Take advantage of being a fat burning machine and get fit. Continue to watch how, what, how much you eat, lift weights and cardio and finally you will have that body you never thought you could have. Yes that one you always dreamed about but just couldn’t see happening for you. It can and will happen for you. Be persistant, be patient and work your steps to a healthy and fit body. Keep lifting weights, keep eating 5-6 small meals a day with protein and carbs in every meal, and do you cardio everyday and the majic will happen for you like it has for many, many others.

And remember, when it comes to most things in life, “It is always to soon to quit.”

Always interested in hearing from you….

God Bless You,

“How Fast Can This Weight Be Gone?”

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The number one question our clients are focused on is “HOW FAST CAN THIS WEIGHT BE GONE?” It is not only during their initial consult but pretty much through out their entire time with us working on losing the weight. Whether it is 15lbs, 30lbs or 120lbs. why can’t it come off faster is often the complaint we hear. Although our clients insist it is alot harder to lose the 30lbs then it was putting the 30lbs on…I’m not so sure about that. We are all creatures of our habits whether those are healthy and fit habits or unhealthy and unfit habits…we are what we live and eat.

So everyone wants it off right NOW, with little to NO work please! Since when is something like a whole body transformation going to occurr with-out hard work? Without a plan? Without being alittle uncomfortable. For success in any venture from running your own business, saving for a car or vacation or the next best phone, to getting you Master’s Degree it takes a plan, focus and consistancy of purpose to accomplish that goal.

On to exactly how long it will take you to lose the pounds. If you want to lose weight momentarily for a special occassion and don’t plan on staying at that weight then there are several methods that people have employed from several years ago to hundreds of years. The first and probably the most popular is the “Starvation, Dehydration Plan”. It is quite simple really, you just pretty much stop eating to much (go way below your resting metabolic rate) and drinking to much and watch your weight plummet. Of course as soon as you resume eating and drinking to sustain your life your weight will skyrocket back up to your previous weight plus some because your have now successfully lowered your metabolism to slow snail speed and are now an efficient fat storer instead of a lean, mean fat burning machine.

Next there is the “Pick up a bad habit to curb my hunger pains” when not eating such as smoking cigs, taking legalized speed and on up to cocaine habits/addictions. On to the not eating at all with “Anorexia” or the binging and purging of “Bulimia.” Other popular plans include eating only protein and fats…can you guess the name of that program? Or how about eating cabbage soup for the next two months? Do any of these ways to lose weight sound like fun? Sound easy? I think they all sound like plain hard work and very, very uncomfortable.

OK so if all the plans up to this point are unhealthy and temporary exactly “How Fast Can This Weight Be Gone?” Good question. Rule of thumb to healthily lose weight without lowering you metabolism (all other plans mentioned do this) is two pounds of fat a week…not neccesarily scale weight. What do I mean by not scale weight? Hopefully if you have made a decision to drop some pounds you have also decided to do it in a healthy way which means you will incorporate weight training, balanced diet and cardio exercise in your plan. It will require consistent exercise 6 days a week with cardio and up to an hour on some days. Also you will weigh train all muscle groups at least once a week and eat a balanced diet of protein, carbs and fat with every meal in small meals through out every day. You WILL put muscle on your body thereby successfully increasing your metabolism and be on your way to becoming a fat burning machine.

If someone asks you, “If I show you how you can still eat a variety of food 5-7 times a day, spend alittle over an hour a day weight training and cardio and in several months you will be well on your way to losing all that weight you have spent most of your adult life trying to lose are you interested?” What will be your answer? Will you look at all the changes you will have to make to make it happen. Like going from 1-2 meals a day to 5-7 meals a day. Working out where you just stopped eating before and layed on the couch because you didn’t have the energy to move. Having to learn how to lift weight and cardio effectively to make your time count. Maybe being sore from your workouts.

It just seems to me many, many people make this losing weight so much harder than it really is. If you can go without eating for months at a time why can’t you learn to eat healthy food and WORK towards getting the body you have always wanted. Forming healthy and fit habits in the process and continuing to live your life in that manner. Hopefully you will get some insight from this entry and make a decision to feed your body, exercise your body and therefore get the body you want. And when that happens you will turn around and teach all those around you to be healthy too. If we all do this we can conquer the hopelessness many people have with their weight that makes them get desperate and do desperate things. We can work together and make big changes.

Of course I am always interested in feedback….

God Bless You,
