Do things “On Purpose”

Friday, April 24th, 2009

When was the last time you did something “On Purpose”? Not because you had to do it or thought you should do it but because you planned it and followed through with it.

Do you do things because they fall in your lap?  Or because your spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend would make your life uncomfortable if you didn’t do it?  What makes you do the things you do through out the day?  Really think about it – I really want to know the answer to this question and you should too.  If you can figure out what makes you tick and do, do and do more, then you can figure out a way to make health and fitness a part of your day as well.   You need to look deep inside and try to figure out WHY you do the good and bad things you continue to do.  Take a deep, deep look…are you feeling empty, unsatisfied, not content with your purpose, your life, your reason for being?

Many times we get clients into our studio that will tell us they want to get healthy and fit. Then they go about doing everything to stay being unhealthy and unfit even after many suggestions as to what exactly a healthy and fit life might look and feel like. With many excuses as to why they could not eat at all today(or eat very little-so, so busy), cardio not happening and strength training only because they paid for the session already, why did they bother to come in and SAY they wanted to change their life and are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and then what happened?  Did they feel uncomfortable for long enough to come in and get something started and suddenly relax when they just took at least the first steps in that direction?

They were uncomfortable enough to step out of their comfort zone(ie: living an unhealthy life in what ever context that means to them) to then look for a way to get comfortable again.  Got involved with some healthy and fit people so at least they look like they are trying to change their situation(ie: personal trainer). Give it a shot for oh, about a week or two, if really committed for 8 weeks and then?

Fall off the proverbial wagon…as in nothing is right and this just isn’t working for me…and on and on and on…..The best one…this just isn’t working for me because for some reason my body is different then everybody elses and I just can’t lose weight, or put muscle on or whatever the goal was… and the excuses just keep coming…I just don’t have what it takes, I’m not disciplined enough and on and on it goes.  Does any of this sound familiar?  Have you said it or do you know someone around you who has used one or all of the excuses listed over time?

Well quess what. It doesn’t take some special characteristic to acheive a healthy and fit life. Just a want to do it…a very special WHY or WHY’s to do it. Do it “on purpose” have a very good and deep reason…deep and good enough so that when the obstacles start coming your way you can withstand the onslaught.  You can say NO to that wife who keeps sabataging your healthy eating, or that best friend who keeps snickering and telling you there is NO WAY you can overcome the 100+ pounds you have to lose…

Your “On Purpose’ is your plan. When you make the committment to living a healthy and fit life it is important to also plan out all the obstacles that will be coming your way as a result of your choice to live healthy…write it down. Who is going to be your support, who is not… How will you stay motivated when you have to get up at 5am every morning to do your cardio?  Do you have someone around, or blogs, websites, any social networking that will keep the infusion of enthusiasm flowing… Will your spouse watch the kids when you go weight training? Will the family be behind you when you start changing the food being served into healtier fare?

These are just some of the questions you might want to consider. I am sure you can come up with many, many more.  Today is the day to sit down and start writing your reasons for being, for being healthy, for being fit…for being alive again. Start living your life “on purpose”.
